UNYA Education

UNYA Victoria has a long history of education and involvement with students in our state. Education is one way that UNYA hopes to increase awareness about the United Nations and its processes, local and international affairs and the value of multilateralism as an approach to problems at a local and global level.

UNYA Victoria offers schools the opportunity to have UNYA members attend to give interactive information sessions on the United Nations; its bodies, structure and mechanisms. Members can also give information sessions on pertinent local and international issues. Mock sessions of the UN General Assembly or Security Council can also be arranged, and are an excellent way for students to gain first hand experience of how the UN really works.

Our representatives work with teachers to tailor sessions to the specific requirements of the class and curriculum, with the potential to address a wide range of topics. Education Sessions can be as short as one hour or run over one or more school days, can involve any number of students in all high school year levels, and are offered on a strictly not-for-profit basis.

Interaction with young students in this environment provides those students with excellent role-models and mentors. These experiences foster the confidence of all students to express their opinions on the issues that are important.

In addition to in-class sessions UNYA also runs Day Forums involving multiple schools. These forums centre on a single topic and involve expert guest speakers, intensive discussion led by UNYA facilitators and lively debate. We hope to see many new students at our Day Forums in 2009.
